As part of the wider Bothnia Bulk project, this summer, Port of Raahe will extend the size of the deep-water harbour.

About 25,000 m3 will be dredged from the harbour-basin and stored in a separate basin. Later the dredgings will be used to build a new harbour area at Lapaluoto of about 1.5 hectors.

The dredging contractor is Terramare Oy, which has previously dredged the Raahe fairway and the harbour-basin with a sailing depth of 10.0 meters and constructed the docks at the port of Lapaluoto. The extended port-basin enables ESL Shipping Ltd's new LNG, more environmentally friendly bulk carriers to operate and discharge safer in the harbour basin. These new ships, the M.S Viikki and M.S Haaga will start operating in Raahe this summer.

The expansion of the Raahe harbour-basin is part of the EU approved Bothnia Bulk project, and the parties implementing it are the ports of Raahe, Luleå and Oxelösund in Sweden, SSAB Europe Oy, ESL Shipping Oy and Raahen Voima Oy. The EU has granted the project applicants a CEF grant. The grant received by Port of Raahe Ltd. is intended for the expansion dredging and improvement surveys.

The dredging work will be completed by the end of this year.
